New Zealand farmer sets new wheat world record at 258.8 bu/ac

Ashburton, New Zealand farmer Eric Watson has set a Guinness World Record for wheat yield — a second time.

Finishing up at 258.Eight bushels per acre, the feed wheat paddock produced 17.398 tonnes per hectare in a area that averages about 12 tonnes/hectare.

Watson’s farm grew a record 16.791 tonnes per hectare wheat crop in 2017.

“We are very proud to have achieved such a end result. The Guinness World Record is a pleasant recognition of our laborious work and new improvements we‘ve put in place. While we have been thrilled with the record end in 2017, we noticed methods wherein we might make enhancements and obtain a good larger yield,“ says Watson, in a press launch.

The even-higher yield was achieved via new cultivars, switching to liquid nitrogen, and monitoring plant well being extra repeatedly, Watson says.

Planted in April 2019 and harvested on in February 2020, the wheat selection was Kerrin, bred by KWS, a feed wheat.

Watson labored carefully with Bayer Crop Science for agronomy recommendation and crop safety merchandise.

“We are delighted to see another Guinness World Record come out of New Zealand and to have contributed to this incredible result,” says Bayer Regional Business Manager for Mid & South Canterbury, David Weith.
